My favourite film by Rosa

Category: Intermediate 11-12 Date 2012-06-01 10:26:47

They were other times. A different way of living.  There were a lot of poverty but the family was very close. He lived alone and  was always angry. The job was the  most important thing for  him.  His obsession was to count money.  It  was cold, the chimmey was lit, the people was  singing by the streets and the  families  had  gathered:  It was Christmas Day!.

Everybody was happy, but he only continued thinking about himself , about his work and about trying to win the greatest  amount of money.

He was lost. Three ghosts came to look for him and  they helped him: the past, the present and the future.... That night changed his life and he was happy again.

Can you guess the film? Just try it!

Sergio´s favourite movie

Category: Intermediate 11-12 Date 2012-05-29 11:28:41

I will always remind this movie, as a milestone in my life.

I remember it was  Wednesday, after class, I always went to the movies just to see the new ones. At that time I was studying and working at once, and watching the movie that I will comment you, showed me that in life anything is possible with effort and will.

It´s a movie produced in 2000, directed by George Tillman Jr., starring Robert De Niro, CubaGooding Jr., David Conrad and Charlize Theron as main characters.

The film is based on a true story about the life of Carl Brashear, born into a peasant family of African Americans, whose lives have been strongly marked by RACISM.  Mac's father, Carl, taught him from an early age to appreciate the perseverance and to overcome obstacles that others impose to his dreams.

As soon he was the required age, Carl entered the Navy, but black people were relegated to the kitchen, although on one occasion an officer was impressed with his ability to swim, which convinced Carl to seek new horizons within the Navy .

A couple of years later, Carl entered into the training program for the elite crew of divers, becoming the first African American to do that. But the constant opposition of his colleagues and in particular of the program instructor, Billy Sunday, a man embittered, alcoholic and racist, was responsible for making life absolutely miserable in the training camp.  However the lessons of his father and in particular his strength of will and perseverance did not let the racism, which permeated the army at that time of the film, spoilt his honor. His hard work during the complex diving training made clear his value to his training instructor (Robert De Niro), who rudely and with complicity supported his best diver in order to give him a place in the Navy.

The great opportunity was presented in the search of nuclear bombs lost in the Palomares incident (Spain) in a race against time to find it before the Soviets but he had an accident. While the warhead was hoisted, one of the chains was broken and Carl Brashear, saving the lives of two sailors, had an accident that destroyed his left leg from knee to foot.

The title of the movie reflects the overcoming the spirit of Carl Brashear who with hard work and the help of his former teacher and now friend (Robert De Niro) returns to walk after the implantation of a prosthetic left leg.  He has to pass a new hard access, since there is special interest in not allowing him to become a diver again, but his value is so strong that he manages to overcome the evidence before court, returning to the U.S. Navy from where he never wanted to leave. And after some years of service, he becomes the first African American to be a head-master in the Navy.

So if you're going through a bad time in your life, if you think you can not overcome your circumstances, I invite you to look for this movie and to watch it. Two things will be engraved forever in your mind:

1) Anything is impossible,

2) With hard work, tenacity and perseverance, everything can be achieved.

Do you know which film I am talking about?

Enjoy the film!

Sergy
