DO YOU THINK IT IS RIGHT TO OPEN SO MANY SHOPPING CENTRES IN ZARAGOZA?

Category: Writing 2 Date 2009-05-27 12:43:00

Zaragoza is a small city of around 1.000.000 inhabitants. So far, we have only two medium-size shopping centres, “Augusta” and “Gran Casa”, and another three o four small shopping centres, such us, “Alcampo” and “El Corte Ingles”.

I think it is good for the city to improve the number of shopping centres, since our population needs to have a better offer of services. If it is for sure that Zaragoza has had an International Exposition, it is also true that our city needs more shopping infrastructures that account for the quality of such an important city.

In two years´ time, Zaragoza has doubled the number of shopping centres. Nowadays, we have two big malls, such us “Plaza Imperial” and “Puerto Venecia”, and another medium-size one, “Aragonia”. That is good for people who have many more choices to buy wherever they want, a better range of products and new brands that before could only be found in big cities.

Apart from that, it is a great opportunity to decrease the rise of unemployment.   There are so many jobs in these centres, which offer the opportunity to work part-time and contracts for unqualified young people .

The city is also visited by more people, coming from around and called by the attractive of big shopping centres. This situation results in more benefits for other economic sectors like services, transports, restaurants, etc.

For all these reasons, I think it’s good to open more big shopping centres.

Spanish humour

Category: Writing 1 Date 2009-05-26 18:59:00

 AN ARTICLE ON SPANISH HUMOUR

I like Spanish humour because I think that is based on our own lives.

Spanish people like to laugh at things that happen around us, such as daily things that happen in our houses, between couples, within the marriage, about the families’ economic situation.

Spanish humour is also based on the political situation. Comedy programmes are not only based on the current government but also on the opposition political party.  We usually laugh at the Presidents of each political party in our country. Humorous people try to get the hardest point of each politician’ personality and they make fun of it.

Another kind of humour is made on people from different regions in Spain, especially people from the South of Spain (Andalucia) because they are represented as funny people due to their accent or because they are considered as very lazy people.

There are also many jokes about people from villages because they are considered as short-minded people; jokes about understanding the new technologies or being aware of things that happened in the rest of the world.

Spanish humour is also based on both embarrassing and dramatic situations. However we only laugh if the situation isn´t heard danybody or it is not based on old people or disabled people.

Other kinds of jokes are based on sex.  They are very funny if they are not very strong and can be listened to by young people.

The jokes that I don’t like at all, are those based on the sexual discrimination and people from other countries.

I would say that TV comedy programmes in Spain are specially based on the economic situation of people living in a suburb or on the political map in Spain.

My friend Peter

Category: Writing 2 Date 2009-05-25 12:17:00

I've always believed that the clothes a person wears and the way that person talks and behaves tell us a lot about what that person is like. I also think it's true that we can gain a glimpse of someone's personality from their interests and topics of conversation, and especially from the things they like doing in their free time. A particularly good example of the way someone's leisure activities reflect their personality is my brother, Peter.

Peter likes to pursue interests which he considers 'constructive'. One of his hobbies is making model ships and aeroplanes, something which he takes very seriously. He often spends hours at his workbench gluing the parts together or painting models he has just finished. Not only does this require considerable patience and persistence, but it also clearly shows his desire to do things as carefully and conscientiously as he can. Another hobby my brother has is reading science fiction. He is a voracious reader of such novels. Maybe they are an outlet for his vivid imagination. His tendency to be a bit of a dreamer is certainly reflected in what he likes doing most in his free time ‑watching films on video or at the cinema.

Ever since he was a little boy, cinema has been the most important thing in Peter's life. So obsessed is he that he often spends hours locked in his room watching videos over and over again, even refusing to come down for meals with the rest of the family. He recently started making his own small‑scale films and bought a lot of expensive equipment for this. The results so far have been very impressive, and prove that my brother possesses great talent and creativity.

Generally speaking, Peter's hobbies and interests reflect his tremendous energy and enthusiasm, and his unwillingness to waste time or do nothing. He is more than capable of fulfilling his ambition to become a famous film director. In fact, it would come as no surprise if he ended up like Spielberg one day, making blockbusters, earning huge amounts of money and living in an enormous mansion in Hollywood.
