GENETICALLY MODIFIED ORGANISM (GMO)

Category: WHAT KIND OF FOOD IS GOOD ? Date 2009-04-27 22:56:46

A genetically modified organism (GMO) is an organism whose genetic material has been altered setting up DNA pieces from different sources, into the DNA sequence of this organism, giving it modified genes.

The transferred DNA could come from bacteria, fungus, or other animals or plants, and is usually placed into farming seeds varieties in order to obtain new advantages.

The main grounds to support this type of engineering are related to increasing productivity. Besides, connected with ecology, it is said that you will need less chemical products in your field with this kind of seeds. These two reasons also include less investments by farmers  and, apart from economy, the main idea to carry on GMO is that they will finish with starvation in the whole world.

The problem is that all these reasons are not true.
Firstly, farmers will need to buy new seeds every year because they are planned to be sterile. Secondly, in spite of the fact that farmers have to use less chemical products, they need a new one to destroy all the other living beings in the field. Besides, seeds and these chemical products are sold by the same engineering company which makes all benefits.

Regarding to starvation it is also important to say that we have already produced one and a half times the amount of food needed to provide everyone in the world with an adequate diet, so we don’t need more production. One out of seven people is suffering from hunger, and what they really need is some land to grow food.

As a result, I think that we have to do something to stop engineering companies to fill up our markets with GMO and to get back to organic farming.
